  • Les Chais du Port de la Lune is an urban winery located in an old military bunker amid a residential zone in the city of Bordeaux. Despite the region’s reputation for wine, to our knowledge, it is the only winery located within the city limits. Laurent Bordes and Annica Landais-Haapa started the winery after many years working and living in the Bordeaux wine industry; Laurent in production, and Annica on the business and administrative side. They are fundamentally a negociant, working with growers across France to source organic grapes for their roughly 10-12 cuvées. Laurent believes that the only way to maintain integrity as a negociant is to forge meaningful, long-term relationships with growers, and to act as a steward for their grapes in the cellar.

  • Ironically, being situated amidst perhaps the most traditional of French regions has freed the Chais from any sense of pretension or need to appease a status quo. The wines are always natural made using organic grapes (some certified, some in conversion), with no fining, filtration, and occasional SO2 additions at bottling, although Laurent says he aims to be entirely sulphur-free once they are a few vintages in. Given the range of varieties and regions they work with, the range has a broad stylistic breadth, but there is a through-line of deliciousness and freshness in all of the wines that is hard not to adore from the first sip.
