Gustinella “Vino di Confine” 2023
“Vino di Confine” means wine from the border — a fitting name for the symbolic wine of Maletto, grown at the edge of cultivation on the northern slopes of Etna at 1100 meters above sea level. The vines are ancient, trained as albarelli, and the vineyard is a true field blend: about ten different varieties, mostly Grecanico Dorato and Grenache, co-planted and harvested together as tradition, not technique, would have it.
The grapes are destemmed by hand using a perforated wooden frame crafted by a local artisan, then gently pressed and left to macerate for just a couple of days. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, followed by ten months of aging in cement and glass demijohns.
The result is a wine that sits between worlds — red and white, mountain and lava, history and instinct — a soulful expression of Etna’s quiet borderlands.
