Montenidoli Vernaccia di San Gimignano Carato 2021
Tasting Notes
From a pale straw-yellow hue, this wine opens with captivating aromatics—lemon zest, jasmine blossoms and a hint of beeswax whispering of vineyard limestone. On the palate it shows rich texture and precision: vibrant citrus (yuzu, candied lemon peel), subtle spice (cardamom, saffron) and a long, savory finish with a mineral core. The oak ageing gives it weight without heaviness—elegant structure and mouth-coating clarity.
Why It’s Special
-
This is not your typical fresh-and-fast white. While many bottles of Vernaccia di San Gimignano are made for immediate drinking, the “Carato” bottling from Montenidoli takes things up a notch: fermented and aged in barriques, then bottled with linger to show off serious terroir and finesse.
-
Organic farming on a sun-drenched Tuscan mountainside, limestone and marine-fossil soils, high elevation vineyards = character in the glass.
-
A great value “serious white” from Tuscany: it’s stylish, layered and still approachable—perfect for customers who think “white” means chicken dinner or are curious about whites that age and evolve.
About the Producer
Montenidoli sits high on the hills above the town of San Gimignano in Tuscany, overlooking vineyards with rich marine-sediment and limestone soils that give the wines their energy. The estate (under the guidance of winemaker Elisabetta Fagiuoli) has been farmed organically for decades, and she describes Vernaccia as “a white grape with the body of a red.” The Carato bottling is her homage to Burgundy: carefully managed, barrel-fermented/aged, serious white wine potential. The result: Tuscany meets finesse, terroir meets elegance, and your wine shelf gets a white that stands out.
