Domaine des Canailles Vieille Canaille 2022
Tasting Notes
From about 80-year-old vines of Gamay grown on granite soils in the southern Beaujolais around Ternand, this 2022 delivers juicy red-berry fruit—think wild raspberry and cherry skin—layered with a touch of black pepper and smoky under-brush. The palate is medium-bodied, lively acidity, supple tannins, and a finish that comes in with energy: fresh, fun and complex enough to matter.
Why It’s Special
-
These are old-vine Gamay vines — rare in their age and site-depth — giving the wine richness, character and a sense of place.
-
Farmed biodynamically with whole-bunch or minimal-intervention vinification, this is natural-wine ethic without sacrificing drinkability.
-
A standout for your boutique clientèle: wines that are expressive, terroir-driven but still accessible and fun — ideal for “serious but not serious” red-wine lovers.
-
It brings Beaujolais-village charm but with ambition: more texture and nuance than many entry-level reds, yet at approachable price-point for the shelf.
About the Producer
Domaine des Canailles is the project of two friends, Simon Pérot and Étienne Ubaud, who took over old-vine vineyards in the Pierres Dorées region of southern Beaujolais and transformed them into a biodynamic, low-intervention house. Their winemaking ethos: minimal added sulphur, no or minimal fining/filtration, native ferments, careful élevage. They aim to let the granite soils, the Gamay vines and the vintage express themselves cleanly and fully—fun, expressive wines with backbone.
