Benoît Moreau is one of the most exciting young producers in Burgundy today. The younger son of Bernard Moreau, he struck out on his own in 2020 with part of his family’s vines—and in a few short years has already established himself as a force in Chassagne. But it would be a mistake to overlook his work in Beaujolais, where he also tends choice parcels farmed biodynamically.
One of those sites is Aux Gauthiers, a high-altitude vineyard just outside Morgon, and the results are remarkable. I recently opened a bottle of the 2022 l’Arlésienne Beaujolais “Aux Gauthiers,” and it was one of those wines that kept pulling me back. Not only did it hold up over several days, it evolved—gaining texture, showing brighter, crunchier fruit, and revealing more nuance with each glass. That kind of staying power is rare in Beaujolais, and it’s part of what makes this wine so special.
This isn’t Gamay in its simplest form. Aux Gauthiers has a distinctly Burgundian soul: bright, perfumed red fruits layered with forest floor and crushed rock, all carried with finesse and precision. It’s the same heartbreaking purity and detail that have made Moreau’s Burgundies so sought after—transplanted into Beaujolais.
For anyone who loves Burgundy, this is a bottle worth seeking out. The 2022 Aux Gauthiers proves that Moreau’s touch extends beyond Chassagne, and it’s a wine I strongly encourage you to experience for yourself.
